The second Sunday in May is Mother's Day and Anna Jarvis is credited with having started it. This tradition began with the ancient Greeks, who dedicate their annual spring festival to Rhea, the mother of various Greek gods. Early Christians celebrated the festival in honor of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ. However, no official Mather's Day existed until May 14, 1914, when President Wilson first signed the resolution.
Although there were several attempts to create a special day honoring mothers, the first successful attempt was made by Anna Jarvis to honor her own mother. During the Civil War, her mother formed mother’s clubs to help both the Union and Confederate soldiers. When she died, her daughter Anna wanted to remember her mother by creating a special day for all mothers. She saw this as a day to honor mothers in an intimate way. When people started buying cards, candy and flowers, Anna became very angry. She actually tried to get the holiday stopped, because she felt that the holiday was becoming too commercialized.
